Memory boxes
Let's take a close look at memory boxes - these boxes are made to commemorate special occasions such as weddings, bat-mitzvahs, and births. Memory boxes are always made as private commissions.
Invitations, souvenirs and photographs are sandwiched into the lids (and sometimes into the mirrored base.) The boxes are hinged and the base can include 1, 2 or 3 chambers. Like all my glass art, they are priced by size, so the larger the invitation or photo, the more expensive the box. When pricing a box, it's important to take into account the "hidden" glass - that is, the base and the sides, which add to the cost.
It's possible to order the lid without the box, decorated with lead hangers. This costs far less than a full box but is still a very special gift that the recipients can hang on their wall to remember their special occasion.

Unique Technique:
- The most important element is the inclusion - the invitation or photo that a client provides. The size, design and color scheme for the rest of the box is determined by the invitation colors and shape. If the customer knows of a color preference, I can take this into account.
- After selecting glass for each box, I sandwich the inclusion between 2 sheets of thin glass. I cut the frames - usually 3cm bands - and prepare the lids. I determine if the lid will open from the back or the side; if the invitation has printing on the back, the box must open from the side or the printing will appear upside down when the lid is lifted!
- I size the base slightly smaller than the lid. This ensures a bit of the lid will stick out for easier handling and opening the box. I floor the box with mirror.
- I solder brass tube hinges to the lid and base.
- Adding a bead string between lid and base ensures that the lid can't be opened too far. (Opening a lid too far can stress the seams and rip the hinges off.)
